On the 50th premiere anniversary of The Cher Show (1975), we look back at 5 of her most iconic looks

It’s been 50 years since The Cher Show (1975) premiered, and the sequins still haven’t settled. Her style was never just about clothes; it was about making a statement. With Bob Mackie as her co-conspirator, she turned spectacle into a signature. For example, she wore nude illusion gowns dripping in crystals long before they were red carpet currency, and she wore towering headpieces paired with barely-there ensembles that redefined performance dressing.

On The Cher Show (1975), she was no different. To mark half a century of entrances that remain on every girl’s wishlist, we’ve rounded up some of her iconic looks—on the show and beyond—and reimagined how to make them your own today.

1. Iridiscent sequinned gown

Cher channelled her status as the ultimate ’70s flower girl gone disco with this one-shoulder dress featuring vertical sequinned detailing and oversized iridescent discs that shimmered with her steps.

To recreate the look, opt for the shimmer and drama of the Retrofête’s Candice gown or if you’re after more structure, Rimzim Dadu’s metallic one-shoulder dress is it. Complete the outfit with Givenchy’s crystal-embellished Liquid earrings, Misho Designs’ Pala bangles, and The Attico’s strappy heels.

Capes over jumpsuits? Samantha Ruth Prabhu says yes

Capes have a way of elevating Indian wear, if you ditch the dupatta for a lightweight silhouette on your back. But, Samantha Ruth Prabhu proves that you can style it with just about anything—even jumpsuits. Styled by Prayag Menon, Samantha Ruth Prabhu’s cobalt blue structured jumpsuit, cut from matka silk and paired with an organza cape from Payal Khandwala, tapped into some of the dreamy, billowy silhouettes that had defined the 2020 runways of New York and Paris.

While the jumpsuit featured a sharp collar, pleated front detailing, and a cinched waist, the wide-sleeved organza cape was done up with delicate embroidery along the arms. For glam, the actor wore maximalist diamonds from Nishka Jewellery and sported a pulled-back aesthetic for her hair and makeup—soft, low bun with a side parting, smoky eyes, and fluttery lashes.

Flowing silhouettes and capes return to celebrity wardrobes now and then. Think back to Kareena Kapoor Khan’s look at Lakmē Fashion Week’s gala night: a custom ivory Manish Malhotra sari embellished with delicate lace and rich embroidery, paired with a matching cape that echoed the same design. Or Sharvari’s quilted floral ensemble by Saaksha & Kinni, styled with a cape featuring hand-embroidered cutwork detailing and a dramatic trail.
